The economy of Central Greece is based on agriculture, animal husbandry, industry and tourism. The main agricultural products of the region are wheat, cereals, market garden produce, olive oil and wine. The tourist development especially of the eastern parts of Sterea Ellada is driven by the proximity to Athens and its location close to the Athens-Thessalonica route, which is the main transportation artery of Greece.

The area attracts many tourists from Greece and abroad, all year round. The tourist popularity is due to the many archaeological sites, the medicinal springs, the beautiful beaches, the traditional villages, the idyllic natural landscapes, the important historical and cultural heritage and the interesting opportunities for winter and alternative tourism.

Among the most important archaeological monuments is the world-renowned ancient Oracle of Delphi, on the foothills of Parnassos Mountain, a place with large influence on the ancient world. Important archaeological finds also can be found in Thiva, Thermopylae, Evia, Elefsina, Nafpaktos and Messolonghi.

A large number of visitors are attracted to the medicinal springs of the towns of Edipsos, Kammena Vourla and Ypati, due to the beneficial effects of these springs to the health and the beauty of the skin.

The region of Central Greece, despite its mountainous, rugged character, also offers a variety of great beaches of natural beauty with crystal clear waters. The visitors can choose cosmopolitan or quiet beaches to enjoy sun and swimming or water sports. Evia, the second largest island of Greece, is famous for its beautiful beaches with clear waters. Vibrant tourist activity is also evident on the beaches of Attica and Saronikos Gulf, the southern Evoikos Gulf and the areas of Nafpaktos and Galaxidi.

In the wintertime, escape to the mountainous areas of Sterea Ellada and explore the green natural areas, enjoy the rugged beauty of the landscape, tour the picturesque traditional villages and have fun with outdoor activities and sports. You can cross majestic gorges and foaming rivers, drive or walk enchanting routes through dense forests and narrow valleys and admire the unique enchantment the mountain landscape can offer. The mountainous areas of Evrytania and central Evia, the picturesque town of Arachova, as well as the ski centre of Parnassos with its modern facilities and the casino, also attract large numbers of tourists.

Central Greece, with its countless sights, the historic wealth, the important archaeological monuments, the impressive churches ad monasteries, the valuable cultural heritage, the unspoiled nature and the diversity of landscape, is a blessed place that can offer you unforgettable experiences.
