The island of Donousa has a total surface area of 13 sq. km and it lies to the east of Naxos and north of Amorgos. Its rocky and rough terrain, gives rise to many small coves with small beaches in between.

The island has been inhabited since the ancient years. In the Roman era the island served as a place of exile, while in the Medieval times it was a pirate refuge.
