The main areas of the prefecture are: Kilkis, Axioupoli, Goumenissa, Polykastro.

The prefecture of Kilkis is one of the 13 prefectures of Macedonia. It is situated in the northern part of Central Macedonia, bounded by the mountains Paiko, Belles and Kroussia. It also borders with Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and the prefectures of Serres, Thessalonica and Pella.

The prefecture does not have significant tourist traffic; it lends itself, however, to excursions and outings that offer the visitor peace and relaxation, due to the unspoiled nature and the enchanting scenery.

The modern city of Kilkis, seat of the prefecture bearing the same name, is the agricultural, commercial and transportation centre of the prefecture. The city has significant sights, which are worth seeing and admiring yourselves.

Kilkis Attractions

On the hill of Agios Georgios, the landscape is dominated by the post-Byzantine church of the same name, built in 1830, with an amazing wood carved chancel screen. In the same area is situated the excellent, two storied cave of Kilkis, with an amazing decor of stalactites and stalagmites, one of the most important caves in Greece.
Kilkis has Archaeological, Folk and War Museums with important exhibits.

At a distance of 15 km from the city of Kilkis is located the castle Gynekokastro. In the area lie the ruins of a Byzantine castle built in the 14th century. In the same location, in 1984, were discovered a part of settlement and a graveyard of the Early Iron Age.

Polykastro is a town with an important commercial district, hotels and entertainment facilities. In this area is located a graveyard of the English soldiers who died in the operations of the World War I. Near Polykastro is the small airport of Nea Kavala, which attracts many lovers of air sports.

The town of Axioupoli takes its name of the nearby Axios River. Worth visiting are the enchanting location “Megalo Rema”, the dam and the lake of Metallio, as well as the Natural History Museum, with interesting samples of flora and fauna, and. Also, collections of edaphologic interest.

The historical quaint town of Goumenissa is built at the foothills of Paiko Mountain. Its narrow streets, the old traditional houses and the abundant flowing waters give a picturesque character to the area. Goumenissa is renowned for its wine and “tsipouro” (locally produced distillate) and it has many wine factories. A visit to the monastery of Panagia “Goumenissa” is a must. Its church was built in the 11th century and it also has a folk museum.

You should also visit the beautiful villages Kastaneri, Skra and Mouries, where you can enjoy the wonderful natural settings with rich vegetation and flowing waters forming small waterfalls.

In the south part of the prefecture is the Pikrolimni Lake, well known since the ancient times for the therapeutical properties of its water, also featuring an organized centre of mud therapy.

Also many important archaeological sites and ancient monuments are scattered in the prefecture. In the ancient town of Evropos, a significant finding is the Kouros statue dating back to 6th century B.C.

At the borders of the prefecture with FYROM lies the beautiful Doirani Lake. Its waters are ideal for swimming in the summer and for fishing all year round. The idyllic landscape of the lake offers the visitor a sense of peace and relaxation.

In the mountains Belles and Kroussias, the lush vegetation and the nice walking paths crossing dense forested areas overwhelm the visitors with their beauty. In the Kroussias Mountain can be found a unique in the Balkans Botanic Garden.

The prefecture of Kilkis with its unspoiled nature, the verdant forests, the lakes, the rivers, the idyllic landscapes and the interesting archaeological monuments, the quaint villages and the Byzantine monuments, is bound to impress every visitor.

By bus: There is frequent daily service with KTEL busses to and from Athens and Thessalonica.
By car: You can get to Kilkis by car via the Athens-Thessalonica National Road.

The distance from Thessalonica is 50 km.
The distance from Patras is 546 km.
The distance from Ioannina is 406 km.

By train: Kilkis has frequent daily train service to and from Athens and Thessalonica.
