Mykonos: “The island of winds”

Mykonos

Mykonos Island is 94 naval miles southeast of Piraeus; it is 83sq. km and has 80km of coastal line.

Ιt is the cosmopolitan center of the Cyclades Complex. Its reputation has spread during the last years due to its unique landscape, its archaelogical sites, its cosmopolitan environment and its magnificent beaches.

White-washed, cube-shaped houses are scattered all over the island, narrow streets in the town, chapels and picturesque tavernas hide among art galleries and stores selling jewellery, souvenirs etc.

Trends that sweep through the international scene are born in the intense nightlife of this modern resort. An island of tempting and tempestuous reputation such as Mykonos, with high tourism and a rather superficial lifestyle, inevitably has both fans and critics.

But even the most unsuspecting visitor immediately realizes that Mykonos is not only a crazy “bon-viveur”, but also an attractive, picturesque island with white Chora aside the crystal-clear blue waters of the Aegean Sea.

Direct international charter flights and regular domestic flights from Athens serve frequently, during summer, the airport of Mykonos.

Mykonos Attractions & Surrounding Area

Because it is so famous, Mykonos gets really overcrowded during high season but for those who enjoy the crowd, great fun and all night long entertainment, Mykonos is the ideal place for holidays.

The beach of Platis Yialos is one of the most popular beaches of the island, it is fully organized, offering sun beds, umbrellas, and water sports facilities. Its golden sand and wonderful turquoise crystalline waters attract thousands of people during summer time.

It is reachable by local bus leaving every half an hour from Chora. From Platis Yialos beach, regular taxi-boats go to the beaches of the southern coast which are Paranga, Agrari, Elia, Paradise and Super Paradise.

Agrari and Elia are located one next to each other, forming a huge sandy beach, 10 kilometres from Chora. Elia is the longest sandy beach of Mykonos, fully organized, offering a wide choice of taverns and bars as well as water sports facilities. Agrari Beach is less popular than its neighbour and much calmer. They both can also be reached by local bus.

Paranga Beach is a combination of two sandy beaches separating by a headland and forming a large beach.

The southern beach is the calmer, while the northern one is fully organised and lined by many taverns.

Paradise is one of the most famous beaches of Mykonos, attracting mostly a young crowd by its 24 hours music and its day and night beach parties. Paradise beach is located between Paranga Beach and Super Paradise Beach and is reachable by a footpath from Platis Yialos, by bus or by taxi-boat.

The famous Cavo Paradiso which is a large complex working like a night club, containing a pool, a restaurant and a beach bar, is located on a hill, above the beach. By night, Paradise Beach transforms into a huge club with music and people dancing on the sand and the rocks until dawn.

Super Paradise Beach is located right next to Paradise Beach. It is less organized than neighbouring Paradise and has beautiful crystalline waters and soft golden sand. Super Paradise is the most famous homosexual beach of Greece, attracting homos and heterosexuals from all over the world.

You should visit the church of Virgin Mary Paraportianis, the district Kastro, the graphic windmills of Kastro and the Three Wells that were the unique source of water until 1956.

You should taste the famous “kopanisti” of Mykonos, the “louzes”, the beans “mavromatika” and seafood such as urchins in oil with vinegar, pines, mussels and fouskes, one of the most strange local plates.
