The island of Schinoussa lies approximately in the centre of the Small Eastern Cyclades island complex, to the south of Naxos and northeast of Heraclia. It has a surface area of about 9 sq. km.

Schinoussa has been inhabited on and off since the prehistoric times, as well as during the period of occupation by Venice. Pirates had been using the island as their base and as a refuge, a factor that contributed to its depopulation.

The small community of Mersini is the harbour of the island considered as one of the best small-boat refuges in the entire Aegean Sea. You must visit the small church of Panagia Akathis in Chora and the church of the Annunciation – Evangelismos Theotokou in Messaria.

You should try the traditional tastes of the island: ambelofasoula (string beans), meletinia (sweet cheese-pie) and xerotigana (fried pastries).

How to get there

The nearest islands with airports are Naxos and Paros. There are regularly itineraries to Schinoussa.
