Xylokastro: the “green edge of the homeland”


The seaside town of Xylokastro is 120 km from Athens and 100 km from Patras. It is the seat of the municipality of Xylokastro – Evrostini and belongs to the regional section of Korinthia.

His name was taken from a wooden barracks that served as an observatory in the area during the Venetian domination. The barracks were above the current city, near the river Sytha. According to the 2011 census there are 5,500 permanent residents.

Every summer it receives thousands of visitors and is one of the most important tourist destinations in the Peloponnese. It is an ideal destination for both weekend and long holidays.
In Xylokastro there are many hotels, taverns and cafes, which are the attraction of holidaymakers.
Its most important attractions are the pine forest of Pefkia, its beautiful organized beaches and the coastal road that is ideal for walking any time of the year! There is also a very good bike path, along the beach, literally flooded by bicycle friends!
The rest of the city’s attractions are the Panagia Korfiotissa Monastery, dating back to the 17th century, and the church of Agios Vlasios, which adorns the original works of the great hagiographers Fotis Kontoglou, Agnornora Asteriadis and Spyros Vassiliou.

Xylokastro Attractions

Forest of Pefkia: The Forest of Pefkia is located at the eastern end of Xylokastro, between Xylokastro and Sykia. It is a natural pine forest of 1760 meters above 140 years old. It has been characterized by Karyotakis in his poem as the “green hub of the homeland”. It was also inspired by Angelos Sikelianos. It is an ideal place for walking and running while enjoying the scents from all sorts of flowers and plants.

Monastery of Panagia Korpiotissa: The Monastery of Panagia Korfiotissa, located south of the village of Kamari in the municipality of Xylokastro. It is located at an altitude of 730 meters, at the top of the hill “Koutsa”. The view from this point is unique.

History reports that a small chapel was originally built on the ruins of an ancient building and then the monastery. The monastery initially housed male monks but later turned into a female. The icon of Panagia Korfiotissa, dating back to 1816, is placed in a carved iconostasis, a work of the woodcarver Ioannou Vassiliou.

Trikala Korinthia: Driving from Xylokastro at a distance of 20 km are Trikala Korinthias. Trikala Korinthias is nestled on the slopes of the Zireia plateau and consists of three districts: Kato Trikala Korinthia, Mesaia Trikala Korinthia and Ano Trikala Korinthia. It remains a traditional area with stone squares and perennial plane trees that will surprise you with its rare beauties, the mountains, the crystal clear waters, the snow combined with stone and wood and the hospitality of its inhabitants creating a peaceful and serene landscape which will make your stay unforgettable.

Beaches

Pefkia Beach: From the forest of Pefkia extend the beach of Pefkia, a beach with clear blue waters and large pebbles. It is an organized beach with sun loungers and umbrellas, with great visitation due to its reputation.

Aristonafton Beach: The beach of Aristonafton is sandy and quite quiet as it is not organized.

Sykias Beach: Next to Xylokastro you will find the village Sykia and its homonymous beach. Here you will also find pebbles and clear waters.

Xylokastro is at a distance 120 km from Athens.

From Athens you can reach Xylokastro if you follow the National Road Athens-Korinthia-Patras. The distance is 120 km.

From Patra you can reach Xylokastro if you follow National Road Patras-Korinthia. The distance is 95 km.

There are daily bus services from Athens and Patras to Xylokastro.
