Kalamata is the city of the southwestern Peloponnese and the capital of Messinia. The city is built on the site of ancient Farai, on foothills of the imposing Taygetos in the heart of Messinian Bay.

Kalamata is the second largest city in the Peloponnese after Patras and it is 255 km from Athens, 215 km from Patras and 715 km from Thessaloniki.

The city of Kalamata is the financial, commercial and administrative center of the southwestern Peloponnese and its geographical position and mild Mediterranean climate make it one of the most charismatic cities.

The municipality of Kalamata includes 13 municipal districts that stretch from the city’s west central lowlands to the volume of Taygetos and the east coast.

The old town was built on the ruins of the ancient city of Farai. Its name „Kalamata“ first appears in 1142 to the third part of the Life of Saint Nikon „Repent“. Its name probably came from the monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary the Kalomata or from the reeds of Nedon. The latest version is strengthened by other placenames that have taken their name from the reed.

The history of Kalamata is lost in the mists of time, after starting from the EH era (2600-2300 BC) having traces of human life found in Akovitika 2-3 km southwest of Kalamata. The city came under the domination of Sparta (8th BC – 4th century BC), the Franks (1205 AD), Venetian (1685-1715mCh) and then the Turks.

Kalamata and the surrounding area of ​​Mani, played an important role in the Revolution of 1821. The most important historical event of Kalamata is the liberation from the Turks on 23 March 1821. Then, Nikitas, Kolokotronis, Papaflessas, Petrobeis Mavromichalis and other chieftains entered the city as liberators. In the church of Apostles was celebrated doxology and then began the Revolution of 1821.

In the late 19th century the port of Kalamata was built that is up to date, and the city experienced considerable growth and acne. Today, Kalamata has managed to retain the charm of the old aristocratic city with the historic center, the beautiful neoclassical buildings and the modern facilities.

The city’s economy is based on agriculture, especially in production of olive oil, olives, figs, raisins, fruit and also tourism. In the area there are several industries of processing and standardization agricultural products as well as the important unit of tobacco Karelia.

Kalamata is birthplace of many important personalities such as Nikitaras (Niketas Stamatelopoulos, 1782-1849) chieftain of the Revolution of 1821, Alexander Koumoundouros (1815-1883), a great personality of politicians who served 10 times as prime minister in the late 19th century, Mary Polydouri (1902-1930) poet of the romantic school, Vassilis Fotopoulos (1934-2007) the set designer and Nicholas Politis (1852-1921) the folklorist.

Other major artistic and political figures are Yanni (Yannis Chrysomallis) composer and pianist, Antonis Samaras the politician, Prokopis Pavlopoulos the university professor and politician etc.
