Psara is a small island with a very long history that showed great heroism in the 1821 National Struggle as the third naval power in Greece at the time and helped a lot in this fight of the Greeks.

From this place came many famous fire-raisers like Kanaris, Vourekas, Vratsani etc. The Turks retaliated and destroyed the island in 1824. Every year on 22th of June the few hundred inhabitants, honor the anniversary of the holocaust.

Psara with Antipsara, located northwest of the island. In the northern part of the island, on top of Prophet Ilias is the monastery of the Assumption with a very valuable library. Visit the church of St. Nickolas and the house of Kanaris. Psara are reknowned for its lobsters, honey and local cheese.
