Macedonia is the largest geographical region of Greece occupying the northern part of the country. On its western side, Macedonia is bounded by the Pindos mountain range. To the east it extends up to Nestos River. To the north it borders with FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) and Bulgaria, to the east with the periphery of Thrace, to the northwest with Albania, while to the south it borders with the periphery of Thessaly and also it is bathed by the Aegean Sea.

It comprises 13 prefectures: Grevena, Drama, Imathia, Thessalonica, Kavala, Kastoria, Kilkis, Kozani, Pella, Pieria, Serres, Florina and Chalkidiki.

Macedonia, home of King Philip and his son Alexander the Great, is a popular destination for Greek and foreign visitors, all year round. Its countless spots of natural beauty, the dashing rivers, the picturesque lakes, the vast plains, the majestic mountain ranges, the unspoiled forests, the impressive caves, the spectacular waterfalls, the important wetland habitats and the crystal clear water of the Aegean Sea invite the visitor to pure nature.

Strewn with many archaeological sites, historical monuments, important museums, imposing castles, traditional stately homes, Byzantine churches and monasteries, the region offers the visitor a route of escape from the routine, a route fading into the past.

In Macedonia is built the second largest city of Greece, Thessalonica, which is often mentioned as the “co-capital ” of Greece. Also called the “nymph of Thermaikos” for its beauty (Thermaikos is the Gulf extending south of the city), Thessalonica was built around 316 B.C. by the King Cassandros.

The graves of the Macedonian Kings in the city of Vergina constitute one of the most important tourist attractions in Macedonia. The monasteries of Agio Oros (Holy Mountain) and the Byzantine monuments of Thessalonica also attract a lot of visitors.

The picturesque lakes Prespes, the Lake of Kastoria, the Edessa Waterfalls and the wetland habitat of river Nestos Estuary will surely enchant all nature lovers.
