Thassos is a beautiful island in North Aegean Sea, which belongs to the prefecture of Kavala. It lies opposite the estuary of Nestos River and the city of Kavala, only 8 nautical miles from the Macedonian coast.

The emerald island of Thassos with its impressive natural scenery, the rich historical and cultural background and the modern tourist infrastructure, is a pole of attraction for many Greek and foreign tourists.

Everything is in harmonious coexistence here. The rich vegetation of green pine forests and olive-tree groves, the clear blue waters of the Aegean Sea, the important archaeological sites, the picturesque settlements with their traditional architectural style and the intense life, all give a special character to the island.

The picturesque town of Thassos with its natural beauty preserves its traditional style and it is home to many historical monuments. These include the walls of the ancient town, with a length of 4 km, the districts of the Gate of Hermes and that of the Gate of Silenus who was considered the protector of Thassos, as well as the Gate of Hercules and the Gate of Dionysus, the temples of Hercules, Pan, Dionysus and Poseidon, the ancient theatre of the 4th century B.C. close to the walls with excellent acoustics, the ancient agora with the temple of Zeus Agoreus and three stoas, the medieval acropolis, the Arch of Caracalla, a remnant from the Roman years. Thassos also has an important Archaeological Museum with a rich collection of findings from digs in ancient Thassos.

You should also visit the Folk Arts Museum of Theologos, the Folk Arts Museum of Limenaria, the Folk Arts Museum of Kallirachi and the Vagis Museum in Potamia, where works of the sculptor Polygnotos Vagis are on exhibit. In the archaeological site of Alyki there are important ancient and medieval monuments. The entire island is strewn with many churches, monasteries and picturesque chapels.

Besides the beautiful town of Thassos, many traditional villages are worth visiting, which have to offer excellent points of interest, as well as great beaches.
Limenas is the administrative and commercial hub of the island, with many hotels, restaurants and public buildings, but also with some points of great archaeological interest. You should visit the touristy Limenaria, the ruins of the Venetian castle, the old mines, the majestic “Palataki” (Little Palace), which dominates a rocky cape and the cave underneath. The area of Prinos is of great economic significance for the island, due to the undersea oil fields discovered there. In the area of Prinos you can visit the Prinos tree grove “Dasyllio” and the church devoted to Agios (St.) Panteleimon.

The cave of “Dracotrypa” in Panagia enchants the visitors with its impressive stalactites and stalagmites. The traditional village of Theologos is ideal for walking and hiking. The watermill, the stone-built bridge, the picturesque churches, the houses with their amazing architectural style and the natural setting invite our interest.

You should also visit the beautiful villages Maries, Potamia and Rahoni with important points of interest and enjoy the beauty and the picturesque scenery.

How to get there

By Ferry: There is frequent daily ferry and hydrofoil service to and from the island of Thassos, from the ports of Keramoti and Kavala. There are also ferry connections to the North Aegean islands (Lemnos, Lesvos, Agios Efstratios and Chios).
