“Accessible Tourist Destination Sign”

It is indicative that in the law of the Ministry of Tourism that was recently passed in the Parliament, the “Accessible Tourist Destination Signal” was instituted, in order to promote and highlight destinations that meet specific criteria, so that they are accessible to everyone, including the disabled and special population groups. eg disabled people, the elderly, pregnant women, children), but also the “Accessible Tourism Business Signal” in tourism businesses in order to raise awareness and motivate them to become more friendly, accessible and therefore more easily accessible to people – citizens and tourists – with disabilities or reduced mobility.

A very important pillar of the plan for accessible tourism are the projects to improve the accessibility of Greek beaches and related facilities, to ensure safe and easy access by all visitors to the destination. It includes projects on Greek beaches, with semi-permanent infrastructure, such as beach access ramps, wheelchair access corridors, shower facilities, locker rooms and toilets, shading areas for wheelchair users, etc., interventions that are considered necessary in order to develop a complete tourist accessible maritime destination.

“The diversification and enrichment of our tourism product with accessible tourism policies are important tools for the emergence of Greece as an accessible tourism destination”, points out the Minister of Tourism, mentioning indicative actions, such as strengthening the consultation with the Regions through the Regional Tourism Council , but also with all the involved bodies of tourism and People with Disabilities, the creation of a Network of Accessible Tourist Destinations, the inclusion of accessible tourism in the annual Marketing Plan and the creation of an accessibility logo to promote Greece as an accessible tourism destination.

In addition, all EOT websites are upgraded to be accessible and friendly to People with Disabilities, while the Ministry of Tourism gives great weight to the integration in tourism education and training of the dimension of disability and accessibility of people with disabilities in tourism services, with the introduction in the curricula of the Schools of the Ministry of Tourism of relevant thematic units.
