Salamina is the biggest island of Argosaronikos Gulf and is just 1 nautical mile away from Piraeus Port. The small distance of the island from the capital, in combination with the numerous and interesting choices that can offer to you, render it an attractive holiday destination.

Salamina Island has been known since the antiquity, as the most glorious naval battle in Greece took place here, between Greek and Persians, in 480 B.C.

On the island, there are two exquisite pinewoods-the forest of Faneromeni which is offered for walking and jogging, and the forest of Kanakia, where mountain bike games are held.

The modern town of Salamina, or Koulouri for the locals, is the capital of the island, which maintains though its traditional color, thanks to its scenic traditional neighborhoods.

In Salamina Town, there are a lot of important sights. The coast of Karaiskakis, with palms along it, which leads to Koulouri beach, reminds an exotic landscape.

Here, you can also find many churches of traditional architecture, with great hagiographies. You can visit the cathedral of Saint Minas, Panagia of Mposkos or Katharos with its astonishing murals of 1758, the tabernacle of Saint Georgios, built onto the base of proto Byzantine basilica of 6 th century, as well as the church of Saint Dimitrios, the oldest church in Salamina, where the bones of hero Georgios Karaiskakis are saved.

The town also disposes a Museum of Popular Art and History, which is housed in the Municipal Palace, and a library where 3500 volumes exist. In Paloukia, the open-air Nautical Museum with the cannons and torpedoes is a sublime spectacle.

Do not miss to visit the hill of the Mills, where the two windmills, buildings of 18 th century predominate, but also the biggest and the most important byzantine monastery of the island, the Monastery of Faneromeni.

Other areas with significant sights are Ampelakia, where the acropolis of Ancient Salamina is found, Peristeria with the fantastic cave of Euripides that came to light after excavations, and verdurous Aianteio, where a large proto Greek settlement existed.

Salamina except for the splendid sights, the landscapes with rich vegetation and the great historical route can also display many wonderful seacoasts with impressive natural beauties and continuous alternation of sandy and pebbly beach. The south coast of the island offers more ideal for swimming and fishing beaches. Most known are the beaches: Kanakia, Peristeria, Gyala, Selinia, Satirli and Panagia. In the north coast of the island there is the beautiful beach of Faneromeni with fine sand.

Coastally: Ferry Boats depart daily from Piraeus Port and Perama to Salamina.
