Soufli in the UNWTO list of the best tourism villages 2021

Soufli, a municipality in the remote Evros region, was selected by the World Tourism Organization (WTO) as one of the best examples for the development of rural and agritourism, one of 41 villages selected from more than 170 applications.

Undersecretary Sofia Zacharaki set up a special committee last summer to select the Greek candidacy files, which unanimously decided to submit the candidacies of Soufli, Western Samos and Alonissos.

The final selection was made by POT and the award of Soufli took place in Madrid within the framework of the General Assembly of the Organization.

The competent Deputy Minister of Tourism Sofia Zacharaki stated in this regard:

“It is extremely gratifying that today Soufli, among so many destinations internationally, is chosen to be part of a global network that promotes the best examples of sustainable rural tourism development. Soufli, as a special tourist destination, has a lot to offer but also to gain from the network of Best Tourism Villages. We are grateful for the trust of the BTV network and POT, and I am sure that this will be the beginning of an extremely fruitful cooperation and a very interesting journey for our acoustic Soufli and its inhabitants. As a Ministry we will continue and intensify our effort, so that the Greek tourism of the future is enriched with more quality options, and each region of the country to develop its tourism potential, with respect for its natural and cultural heritage and commitment to the principles of sustainable development “.
