Kimolos is 37km2 and the sailing around of the island is 16 miles. It is a volcanic and mountainous island with a unique variety of stones, whose main trait is the white colour (“ land of Kimolos ”).

According to the legend Kimolos was given her name by its first resident, Kimolos. The Venetians called it Argentiera (silver land), most probably due to the stones which have a characteristic silver color.

Kimolos does not only have unique stones but also an exquisite of flora and fauna. There is the Meditteranean seal, the rare kind of viper, called lepentina, the sea-raven, the golden owl and a rare kind of hawk.

Chorio is the capital of the island and is built on the foot of mount Xaplovouni. It is situated in the south-eastern part of the island and is 1km far from the port called Psathi. You will see the white washed houses with their blue windows and the yards which are pure samples of the Aegean architecture, while the paved narrow streets offered for the famous “vegera”. It is located around of the castle and it consists from the settlements of Mesa Kastro and Exo Kastro, which are connected with four fords called “Portares“.

One of the important features of the island is the many churches dating back to the 16th and 18th century. According to history, a specific order of Sultan the churches of Kimolos were the only ones which could retain and ring their bells during the Turkish Rule. Remarkable are the churches of Panagia Odigitria, the Birth of Jesus Christ which was built in 1592 by priest Ioannis Ramfos as it is clearly stated on a marble inscription in the southern door of the church, Agios Ioannis Chrisostomos. Other churches are Metamorfosi Sotiros, Evaggelistria, Timios Stavros, Panagia Ikonomou, Agios Spyridon etc.

Except for the churches in Chorio there also many country churches. The most important are: Agia Aikaterini, Agios Fanourios, Agia Fotini, Pantokrator. Kimolos was the island where a holy woman named Osia Methodia became a martyr and there is a celebration to honour her contribution on 5th October.

The shine beaches of Kimolos combine the rocky landscape with the silky sandbox on the other. The beaches of Aliki, Bonatsa and Kalamitsi have large beaches with golden sand and are the ideal place in any weather. The beaches of Agios Georgios which is full of white sand, Livadaki, Klima, Rema and Psathi where is the port of the island can offer swimming and sun-bathing.

There are also some beaches in the north and west of the island as Soufi, Monastiria in the north and Ormos of Athinia, Kastro in the west and the island opposite Psathi, Poliegos which can be approached by the sea. In the west of the island is the beach of Ellinika, where a dead city and pots of geometrical years was founded. They are kept in the Museum of Kimolos.

How to get there

By Ferry: There are regularly itineraries from Piraeus port to Kimolos.

By high speed boat: There are also departures of High Speed ferries from Rafina.

Connection with other islands: Kimolos is connected with Kythnos, Serifos, Sifnos, Milos, Folegandros, Sikinos, Ios, Santorini, Herakleio, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia & Dodecanese.
