The prefecture of Drama is one of the 13 prefectures of Macedonia. It borders to the North with Bulgaria, to the West with the prefecture of Serres, to the South with the prefecture of Kavala and to the East with the prefecture of Xanthi.

The prefecture of Drama is not very touristically developed, despite its countless spots of natural beauty, the historical monuments and the significant archaeological sites. Nevertheless, the area is an ideal winter vacation destination, also offering opportunities for autumn and summer vacations in the unspoiled nature. The dense forests, the abundant springs, the impressive caves, the majestic gorges, the picturesque villages and the Byzantine monuments, all compose a setting of unequalled charm.

The city of Drama is built on the eastern foothills of Falakro Mountain and it is home to many points of interest. The city is strewn with buildings of the traditional architectural style. The Byzantine Walls, the Municipal Garden, the Statues Park of Diikitirio and the old Muslim “Zonke Mill”, all give a special colour to the city. A walk on the verdant green hill of Korylovo will offer you places for recreation and exercise, as well as an enchanting view, while at the Agia Varvara springs, the running water, along with the verdant green landscape and the refurbished traditional buildings compose a very beautiful setting.

Drama has an Archaeological, a Folk art and an Ecclesiastical Museum, all with interesting exhibits. Do not omit to visit the Byzantine churches of Taxiarches and Agia Sophia, as well as the mosque, which is decorated with amazing frescoes, probably depicting the town of Drama during its Ottoman years.

At a distance of 19 km from Drama, lies the historical town of Philippi, with ruins of the Roman era, while in the area called Kali Vrissi one can see the temple of Dionysus, preserved in good condition. In the town of Nevrokopi, you can visit the post-Byzantine church of Agios Dimitrios (St Demetrius), the fortified position called “Lisse” known for the heroic resistance of its fighters to the Nazi invasion in 1941, the Dam and the artificial lake of Lefkogia.

In the area of Doxato you can see the church of Agios Athanasios, built in the 19th century, which has an excellent wooden carved chancel screen. Just outside the village Dassoto one can enjoy the enchanting Kastania forest, with impressive chestnut trees. You can also visit the traditional settlements of Pagoneri and Perithori.

In the natural points of interest of the prefecture is included also the Maara cave in the area of Kokkinogia, which is naturally decorated with a plethora of stalactites with amazing colours, the beautiful dense forest of Elatia, the only red-spruce forest in Greece and the unspoiled forest of Frakto.

Hiking along the gorge of Petroussa-Pyrgon and the exploration of the Simida forest will offer to the nature lovers a chance to admire natural settings of unequalled beauty.

The winter sports lovers can pump up their adrenaline by skiing at the well equipped ski centre of Falakro at an elevation of 1700 m. Besides the opportunities for skiing, Falakro mountain is also ideal for hiking, mountaineering, climbing, aerial sports, bird watching and walking, and enjoying the beauty of the scenery.

Drama is known for its excellent traditional sweet called “halva” and the tasty delicatessen products. The rich natural scenery, the picturesque settings, the traditional settlements, the ancient monuments and the countless choices for winter and alternative tourism will enchant every visitor.
